September Promises

September is here. Insert obligatory joke about waking me up when September ends. (But actually, I’ll stay awake–I’ve had some pretty frightening nightmares the past two nights and would prefer to walk among the living, for now.) And while the arrival of this ninth month of 2015 may signal a change in weather for some folks, here in the Las of Vegas, it’s still summer. For the next two months.

Le sigh.

Anyway, I’m not here to write about the weather. I’m here to write about what this new month is bringing me: possibly, an end to my current job. What? Read on.

When I first penned my Easily-Attainable 30 Before 30 list, it was June. I’d just finished my VCFA coursework, but had yet to attend residency and graduate. Item #29, Quit My Day Job, seemed like a pipe dream. I was on track to pay off my school in two years, which was the deal–work to pay off school, then quit job.

And then I graduated.

And as it turned out, I was given the most incredible graduation of all time: an exoneration of my grad school debts. Well, not an exoneration, exactly. More like an urging to quit my day job ASAP and write full time. Future advances, if and when they came, would pay off the remaining school balance.

Okay, not that any of that technical stuff matters to you. What matters is that, at the beginning of August, I told my manager that I was ready to make my slow move out of there. And she asked me, how long do we have? And since I am a kind and decent person, I told her I wanted to be done by the end of the month.

Hello. It’s the end of the month.

So where am I now? Well, I don’t know. This week I’m scheduled to work Friday. Next week? Schedule’s not out yet. I’m A-Okay working one day a week, though. Or maybe one day every two weeks. I love my coworkers, and I’m not ready to cut the apron strings there yet. Plus, I’ve got a training mid-month (read: free meal at a Brazilian steakhouse), AND Vision Expo coming up. And a cruise with them in October. So, looks like it’ll be a while before I’m really and truly done. But I think that’s one goal I can cross off my list.
